Another of those little phrases I hadn’t noticed before. How fascinating. I wonder how it came up (I’m picturing Jonah being asked to tick a box on ye olde version of an online form: ‘What is the main purpose of your trip today? Business? Pleasure? Futile attempt to escape deity?’).
I thought at first it meant that Jonah was plagued by a guilty conscience, but the fact that he was able to sleep soundly in the hold of the boat seems to give the lie to that. Was he bragging about it, perhaps? Thinking he had got clean away, that he had fooled God?
Maybe it just came up in normal conversation over dinner the first evening, but it was significant enough for the Bible to mention it.
I wonder why.
